The Plaza Mayor draw didn’t do the Golden Boys any favors. Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, defending champions and world No. 1s, will face their sternest test yet at the Valladolid Premier Padel P2 after landing on the same half as third seeds Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger. Mundo Deportivo reports that “fortune did not smile on the Golden Boys, who will have to face a tough road to the title.” A projected semifinal between the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds means at least one favorite exits early — and that’s only if both navigate dangerous quarter-finals against pairs like Coki Nieto-Jon Sanz or Momo González-Campagnolo.
The tournament runs June 23-28 in Coello’s hometown, where he’s lifted trophies the past two years. But this time, the path to a three-peat looks treacherous from the opening rounds. Even reaching quarterfinals demands wins over quality opposition: Tino Libaak-Alex Chozas or Sanyo Gutiérrez-Maxi Sánchez Blasco could await in the round of 16. Meanwhile, second seeds Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto enjoy a far cleaner bracket, sharing their side only with fourth seeds Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas.
The timing matters. Tapia and Coello enter fresh off victories at the Rome Major and Valencia P1, carrying momentum but also pressure. Galán and Chingotto, still hunting their first Premier Padel title together, will sense an opportunity if the bracket does the dirty work for them.
Partner Shuffles Redefine the Women’s Field
On the women’s side, Valladolid marks a changing of the guard — or at least a reshuffling of it. The tournament will crown a new champion after Ari Sánchez and Paula Josemaría split to partner Andrea Ustero and Bea González respectively. But the real story lies in the cascade of mid-season breakups across the rankings.
The Málaga P1 entry list confirmed the splits: “Pairs that have not found the desired consistency will end their time together,” according to Mundo Deportivo. Alejandra Salazar will debut with Aranza Osoro, while Ale Alonso pairs with Marina Guinart — both duos entering as top-8 seeds despite zero competitive matches together. Vero Virseda and Marina Guinart, fresh off their second FIP Platinum title in three weeks in Paredes, are splitting just days after Guinart admitted, “We keep fighting, starting already at the Valladolid P2.” The Paredes title proved to be their final chapter.
These moves reflect the Premier Padel reality: partnerships dissolve fast when results stagnate. Even mid-table pairs like Jimena Velasco-Vero Virseda and Victoria Iglesias-Aranza Osoro couldn’t survive half a season without breaking through. The only constant is churn.
Top seeds Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea drew the “side of death” again, facing Sánchez-Ustero in their half — a rematch of the Valencia final that ended Triay and Brea’s 13-tournament finals streak. FIP notes that Josemaría “enjoys a special connection with Valladolid,” which could matter as she and González aim to reclaim form after losing in Rome and Valencia.
What It Means
Valladolid offers a brutal stress test for the rankings. If Tapia-Coello fall before the final, Galán-Chingotto could close the gap at the top. On the women’s side, the new partnerships won’t have time to gel — someone will win this tournament with a partner they’ve known for three weeks or less. That’s not sustainable, but it’s Premier Padel in June 2026: results first, chemistry later.
The Plaza Mayor setting adds pressure. Coello defends on home soil. Josemaría chases history in a city she loves. And everywhere, the draw sheets reveal who got lucky and who didn’t.
